Hiking & Via Ferrata in the Dolomites – An Unforgettable Day

Article

A Morning Ritual in the Dolomites

Waking up before sunrise in the Dolomites already feels like the start of an adventure. Packing in the morning is almost a ritual: snacks, water, an extra layer for changing weather, sunglasses, sun protection – and of course the essentials for the via ferrata. Helmet, harness, gloves, and the special ferrata carabiners that click in and out hundreds of times – small details that make all the difference.

Good footwear is just as crucial: I wore my Dynafit Alpine shoes, perfect for mixed terrain and trails, though approach shoes with a grippy sole are also a solid choice. Arriving at the starting point, the Dolomites immediately show off their uniqueness. It was one of the last summer weekends, and the mountains were full of hikers and climbers. My tip: start early and, if possible, use public transport – it saves time, avoids traffic jams, and cuts emissions.

Respect for the Mountain

On the via ferrata itself, safety comes above all. Even though the sport is considered "accessible," it's often underestimated. This time I came across a young woman frozen against the rock face, blocking the route, and an older man struggling with the heat. Moments like these are a reminder: the mountains demand respect.

Along the way, I met a couple from the US. It was their first time in Italy, and they were blown away by the scenery. They told me they'd rented their gear locally – though the process had been a hassle. I smiled and explained that this is exactly where Outzip comes in: an easy way to find and book gear online, before you even set off on your trip.

The Pisciadù Via Ferrata

The route I chose was the famous Pisciadù via ferrata. Once at the top, I treated myself to a hearty meal of eggs, bacon, and fried potatoes at the Trentino Brigade hut. Perfect energy for the descent down the other side of the mountain – tired, but grateful.

That's the magic of the Dolomites: breathtaking views, real challenges, and the simple pleasures of good food and good company along the way. With the right gear and a taste for adventure, an experience like this stays with you for a long time.
