Getting There

Discord Group

About two months before departure, Wandermut opens a private group. There you can coordinate travel, flights, and accommodation with the team, and get to know your team leader and fellow travelers.

Flight

Your destination airport is Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN), usually with a layover (some direct flights from Frankfurt). The bus from Ulaanbaatar to Ulaangom (and Ölgii to Ulaanbaatar) costs around €80 per way, paid in cash in MNT.

Accommodation

Arrange your own accommodation until the start of the tour. Affordable and central: Danista Nomads Hostel; a bit pricier: Ramada Hotel.

On Site

The bus is organized for the whole team so you travel together. The team leader will confirm the exact cost shortly beforehand.

03

Area and Route

The route leads right through the Altai Mountains — over barren passes, steep slopes, and across rushing rivers. Weather, terrain, and local conditions determine the way.

Detours, adjustments, and changes of course are part of everyday life on this tour.

04

Special Notes

Physical Preparation

We'll spend several days in the saddle. A confident feel, stability, and mental resilience matter. No riding experience? No problem — 5–10 riding lessons beforehand are well worth it.

Storing Your Gear

Tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, and most of the food are carried by pack camels. Your daypack goes into the saddlebags — you won't need a hiking backpack on the trail.

05

Safety Briefing

These rules are based on experience from many tours and the knowledge of local guides. The team leader will go over them at the start of the trip. Stick to them — they protect the whole group.

General Rules on Tour

Stick together: no one rides far ahead or falls behind alone; the group does not split up.
Keep communication open: tell the team leader right away — even about minor complaints.
Avoid unnecessary risk of injury.
Hygiene: "Cook it, peel it, fry it, or forget it." Wash your hands before every meal.
Keep your distance from wildlife, avoid unknown plants.
Leave no trace: no trash, no fire pits.
Alcohol is forbidden and can result in exclusion from the tour.

Special Rules for This Tour

Without riding experience, there's an increased risk of falls, kicks, or bites from horses.
Local equipment (saddles, stirrups) may be old and not meet European standards.
Falls from the horse are possible and can lead to injury.
Camels and eagles also carry risks from kicks, bites, or falls.
From September to March, temperatures can drop below −17 °C — without dry gear, there's a risk of hypothermia and frostbite.
Alcohol is often offered as part of local culture; drinking it significantly increases the risk of accidents.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need riding experience?

No. But taking 5–10 hours of riding lessons beforehand will make spending several days in the saddle much easier.

Do I have to carry my own luggage?

No. Pack camels carry tents, sleeping bags, and food; your daily gear goes in the saddlebags.

How cold does it get at night?

Well below freezing in the mountains. Plan for a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of −15 °C (−20 °C in autumn).

How do I get to western Mongolia?

Fly to Ulaanbaatar, then take the team bus to Ulaangom (~€80). Domestic flights only run a few times a week.

Will I get a helmet?

Yes, helmets are provided on-site. You're welcome to bring your own helmet as well.
