Overview
01

The Schedule

Plan for roughly 13 days from Marrakesh and back. Example: a tour from Feb 23 to Mar 7, 2026.

Arrival dayLatest arrival in Marrakesh
Day 1Drive south, overnight at the starting point
Day 2Tour starts
Days 3–12Desert trek from oasis to oasis
Day 13Tour ends, drive back to Marrakesh
Day 14Earliest possible return flight
Build in buffer days. Delayed flights or lost luggage happen. Plan for 1–2 spare days before and after the tour, or you risk missing your return flight.
02

Getting There

Discord Group

About two months before the start, Wandermut opens a private group. There you can coordinate travel, flights, and accommodation with the team, and get to know the team leader and fellow travelers.

Flight

Flights to Marrakesh are affordable — usually €200–300, sometimes under €100. A bit of research pays off.

Accommodation

Arrange your own accommodation until the tour starts. Recommendation: Hostel Equity Point, tucked away in the alleys of the Medina, homey and colorful.

On the Ground

Details on the meeting point and transfer will be shared in the Discord group. The team often travels there together.

03

Area and Route

Roughly 200 km take you from oasis to oasis through the most varied desert landscapes: the dry, rocky hammada of gravel and stone, vast sand dune fields stretching to the horizon, and canyons where it's easy to lose your way.

Sandstorms can occur at any time — they darken the sky and make progress considerably harder.

04

Special Notes

Physical Preparation

Expect many demanding and dirty days. You should be able to carry a backpack of nearly 15 kg over daily distances of up to 18 km — at a brisk, sure-footed pace, since the group doesn't wait for the slowest.

Storing Your Luggage

Leave your personal luggage at the hotel or hostel you've booked. Check in advance whether storage is possible.

05

Next Steps

Invitation to the Discord Group

About 2 months before the tour starts, you'll meet the team and team leader. Save your questions for then — they'll all be answered.

Get Equipped

Go through the packing list and get anything you're missing. Uncertainty is normal — discuss it with the group.

Cover Yourself

Read the safety briefing and take out the necessary insurance. Don't bet on everything just going fine.

Book Your Flights

Not cutting it close — with 1–2 buffer days before and after the tour.

Safety Briefing

These rules are based on experience from many tours and the knowledge of local guides. The team leader will explain them at the start of the trip. Stick to them — they protect the whole group.

General Rules on Tour

Stick together: no one walks far ahead or falls behind alone; the group is not split up.
Flow of information: tell the team leader right away — about sightings, but also about diarrhea, blisters, or mental strain.
Avoid unnecessary injury risks: step deliberately, no climbing or risky games.
Hygiene: "Cook it, peel it, fry it, or forget it." Hand hygiene before every meal.
Keep distance from wildlife: observing is fine, touching is not. Don't blindly reach into crevices or holes.
Leave no trace: no trash, no campfires — everything stays as if we were never there.
Alcohol is prohibited and can lead to exclusion from the group.

Special Rules for This Tour

On tabletop mountains, there's a risk of falling on steep terrain during ascents and descents.
Handling dromedaries carries the risk of kicks, bites, or falls.
Loose rocks and rubble can hit participants following behind.
Long stretches without shade increase the risk of sunstroke and heat exhaustion.
Sudden flash floods are possible in dry riverbeds during rain.
Scorpions and horned desert vipers occur here (mainly May–October). Bites are rare but can be dangerous — the guides avoid known risk areas.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for the Sahara Tour?

You should be able to carry ~15 kg over up to 18 km daily at a brisk pace. Regular hiking with weight is the best preparation.

How much water do I carry myself?

Three 1-liter bottles are enough. Water is refilled from canisters along the way and treated with Micropur.

Is travel included in the price?

No. You book your own flight and accommodation in Marrakech; Wandermut covers the transfer to the starting point, tents, guides, dromedaries and meals.

What insurance do I need?

Overseas health insurance with evacuation cover, trip cancellation insurance, and we recommend Global Rescue.

When is the best time to travel?

Winter through spring. In winter you'll need a warmer sleeping bag (comfort rating 0–4 °C).
