An autumn morning on Bornholm feels like a little break from everyday life. We were visiting my partner's family, and on a clear, sunny morning after breakfast we spontaneously decided to take a short hike with our daughter. The Kids Comfort Air child carrier was our faithful companion – perfect for little explorers who can already walk but still like to be carried now and then.
Our route started in Hammerhavn, the small harbour below the medieval castle ruins of Hammershus, and led us along the spectacular coastline of Hammerknuden, the northernmost tip of Bornholm. This stretch is part of the well-known Kyststien, the roughly 120-kilometre coastal trail that circles the entire island. The route offered everything that makes Bornholm special: rugged granite cliffs, dense pine forests, sweeping views over the sea – and, again and again, that distinctive Nordic light. After about two hours, passing the Opal Lake (Opalsøen), we finally reached the little fishing village of Sandvig, where a warm drink and cinnamon buns were our reward.
Bornholm is a true paradise for nature lovers and families. Thanks to how easy it is to reach – from Berlin the island is about 8 hours away by regional train and ferry – it is perfect for a short break. Particularly handy: with the Deutschlandticket, the ferry from Sassnitz or Mukran to Rønne costs only around €20 per person.
The combination of short distances, family-friendly paths and a calm atmosphere makes Bornholm an ideal destination for micro-adventures – with no long journey or expensive flights.
